Matthew (Anne of Green Gables)

In the 1985 TV movie Anne of Green Gables based on the book by author L.M. Montgomery, Matthew Cuthbert helps his sister Marilla raise Anne Shirley, an orphan from Nova Scotia. Matthew suffers from heart complications, and ultimately died of a heart attack. Marilla and Anne mourned his death, as did all fans of Anne of Green Gables. Years later, in a journal entry, the author said if she’d known her novel would be so popular that the public would demand sequels, she would have kept Matthew alive for at least another book.
