Colored contacts in Middle Earth?

Orlando Bloom’s character, Legolas’ eyes were blue in the Hobbit films (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) released in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. But during the Lord of the Rings movies (The Fellowship of the Ring - 2001, The Two Towers - 2002 and The Return of the King- 2003) his eyes were brown. Hmmm… did they perhaps have colored contacts in Middle Earth?
