Described in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring as a man with "a long white beard and bushy eyebrows that stuck out beyond the brim of his hat," Gandalf the Grey, later known as Gandalf the White, is heralded as the wisest and most powerful of the Istari order. The Istari are the Five Wizards sent to help Middle-earth defeat the threat of Sauron, the creator of the One Ring. When his hobbit friend Frodo Baggins inherits the Ring, Gandalf, portrayed by Ian McKellan, sacrifices everything in order to protect it from enemy hands. Basically, he's just a stand-up guy.
