The Shape of Water (2017) – Fairy Tale/Dark Fantasy, Romance and Monster

Another director who shouldn’t surprise most moviegoers with his ability to blend genres is Mexican auteur Guillermo del Toro. With most audiences becoming familiar with him through comic book films in Blade II and Hellboy, as well as his dark fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth, it’s his 2017 masterpiece The Shape of Water that stands out in his filmography. This Beauty and the Beast-esque fairy tale romance is not only sweet and endearing thanks to Sally Hawkins’ performance, but also features del Toro’s penchant for shocking horror in appropriate doses.
