Samwell Tarly was supposed to be the heir to House Tarly, but his father didn't find him worthy. Sam was forced to join the Night's Watch and renounce his claim. Sam was initially depicted as a bumbling comic relief character to bring levity to the Night's Watch scenes of the show.
