Youngest female nominee in a lead acting category

Quvenzhané (pronounced "Qua-ven-zhah-nay") Wallis became the youngest person ever to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination in 2013 for her lead role as Hushpuppy in the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. She was nine years old. She lost to Jennifer Lawrence, who took the award for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. It's interesting to note that while casting for the film called for auditions by children aged six to nine, Quvenzhané (five years old at the time) and her mother were not deterred and snuck in to audition anyway.
