For his visually-stunning masterpiece Gravity, Mexican-born Alfonso Cuarón took home the award for Best Director at the Oscars in 2014. He beat out David O. Russell (American Hustle), Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and Alexander Payne (Nebraska) for the honor.
