First Middle Eastern film to win Best Foreign Language Film

An Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film was likely unimaginable for director Asghar Farhadi, as no other Middle Eastern film had won in that category before. But after his film A Separation received the same award at the Golden Globes in 2012, an Oscar seemed to be on the horizon. Sure enough, the film, which was also written by Farhadi, won the honor at the Academy Awards.
