First Native actor to be nominated

For his portrayal as kind-hearted tribal leader Old Lodge Skins in Little Big Man, Chief Dan George was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 43rd Academy Awards in 1971. The prolific Canadian chief, actor, poet and author starred alongside Dustin Hoffman, becoming the first Native actor to receive an Oscar nomination.
