We’ve seen alter-ego characters before, like Brad Pitt in Fight Club, but one theory suggests the same to be true of Ferris in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. According to this theory, the film’s events are all conjured up by Cameron, who’s also created the character of Ferris to deal with his own depressive state. He wants to be this ultimate “cool guy” who is beloved by all, and he pines after Sloane, a girl he can’t have, but believes that “cool guy” Ferris can. While he really did steal his dad’s car, Cameron actually spent the day driving around and exploring the city by himself, imagining Sloane and Ferris were with him. At the end of the day, he has gained the confidence he so desires to stand up to his dad, leaving him with a much better outlook on life. So all in all, it was still a pretty great day off.
