The Hours (2002)

Nicole Kidman made her way to the Oscar podium for stepping into the role of esteemed English author Virginia Woolf in The Hours. Virginia, who battled mental health issues throughout her life, committed suicide in 1941 at the age of 59. The film profiles Virginia's declining mental state and mirrors it with the psychological struggles of two other women (played by Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep) in very different time periods, relying on the novel Mrs. Dalloway to beautifully link the stories. It's adapted from Michael Cunningham's 1998 book, which is also titled The Hours.
