Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)/Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (2016) – 16 years

Director Ang Lee’s martial arts classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a surprise hit for many in 2000. As a foreign language film with an international cast it not only became a box office success, but a critical one as well, garnering 10 Oscar nominations and winning four of them. Based on the fourth novel in Wang Dulu’s Crane - Iron Pentalogy, there was room for a sequel to be made. However, production would take over a decade to begin, without Ang Lee. This would result in star Zhang Ziyi refusing to join the film. Adding to this was criticism for casting non-native Mandarin speakers in the original. This led producers to film the movie in English, allowing them freedom to cast whoever they wanted, later dubbing the performances to suit their needs. The end result would see only Michelle Yeoh returning for the sequel with action choreographer Woo-Ping Yuen taking over as director.
