This was a year like no other for many, including at the North American box office. With theaters closing across the continent in March, box office returns ground to a halt, and when they did open with limited seating available, totals were minimal. Most big budget films were moved to 2021, which drastically changed the face of the Top 20 films at the 2020 box office, with only the top five achieving the $100 million mark. When lockdown restrictions lifted somewhat, films that were in the top five weekend box office results for weeks, such as Unhinged and The War with Grandpa, didn’t even make the Top 20 list for the year. All of the films included here were pre-COVID, with the exception of Tenet, which was the only film to cross the $50 million mark after March 2020. ~Alexandra Heilbron
