The Avengers (2012) – $623.4M

Marvel’s culmination for Phase One of their cinematic universe was a game changer on many levels. While the idea of a shared universe wasn’t entirely new, the deliberate planning that went into the MCU created unprecedented success as The Avengers became the first film to open to over $200 million. The film quickly ascended up the record books to be the third highest-grossing film at the time, behind only James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic. What the film did for Hollywood as a whole though, is its lasting impact. It firmly announced Marvel Studios as the new standard bearer for superhero films and quickly had other studios looking to play catch-up with their own versions of a shared cinematic universe.
