Marvel’s culmination for Phase One of their cinematic universe was a game changer on many levels. While the idea of a shared universe wasn’t entirely new, the deliberate planning that went into the MCU created unprecedented success as The Avengers became the first film to open to over $200 million. The film quickly ascended up the record books to be the third highest-grossing film at the time, behind only James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic. It firmly announced Marvel Studios as the new standard bearer for superhero films and quickly had other studios looking to play catch-up with their own versions of a shared cinematic universe.
