The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) – $424.7M

The flash success of young adult dystopian sci-fi novel adaptations is best encapsulated in the box office success of The Hunger Games’ sequel Catching Fire. The sequel proved that the Jennifer Lawrence-starring adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel was no fluke, and kicked off a short-lived trend that would see other studios looking to find similar success, with the Divergent and Maze Runner series. Catching Fire remains the high point for the sub-genre with its $424.7 million gross at the domestic box office and a solid $865 million worldwide. It’s the only film on this list that came short of reaching the billion-dollar mark.
