Third-act problems aside, Danny Boyle's venture into the science-fiction genre is thoughtful, beautiful and poignant, and for large segments of its runtime it lends itself more to Kubrick and 2001: A Space Odyssey, rather than anything contemporary. With deep psychological and emotional profiles for his characters, Boyle is unafraid of making an apocalyptic film that's actually about people instead of just the apocalypse, and the result is powerful and moving. Sprinkled with gorgeous visuals and unique editing choices, Sunshine mixes the best of what's classic with the best of what's contemporary.
