The Road

They don't come much bleaker than this. John Hillcoat's adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel depicts an unexplained, apocalyptic wasteland where an unnamed man and his son try desperately to fight off the elements, cannibals and despair. Still, amongst all of the blackness, there are truly wonderful, human moments in the film that make it unrelentingly emotional: amidst its grey palette, a flash of color is enough to make you stop and think about the last flower you saw. Featuring some stunning performances and beautiful sequences, The Road makes a strong case for humanity's inherent goodness.
