A Bug’s Life vs Antz

Time difference: 8 weeks apart

DreamWorks Animation’s first foray into CG animated films was a contentious one when it released in 1998. A public feud between DreamWorks Animation founder John Katzenberg and his former Disney bosses led to the development and creation of Antz to rival Pixar’s A Bug’s Life. Both films followed the core idea of an ordinary worker ant with an unorthodox level of thinking, working to save the princess and end conflicts with other insects. Though Katzenberg maneuvered Antz to move up to an October 1998 release, nearly two months ahead of A Bug’s Life, the latter would prove to be the more popular of the two with Antz often being forgotten amongst DreamWorks’ more colorful offerings.
