Mark Ruffalo has played the Incredible Hulk since the first Avengers movie, but he wasn't the original actor cast in the role. Edward Norton first played the green giant in the 2008 standalone film The Incredible Hulk, but was let go before the Avengers franchise took off. In a statement, Marvel said the recast wasn't based on money, "but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of [the] other talented cast members."
I much prefer Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, and was very glad to see the swap-over …
Edward Norton needs to stay with those oddly peculiar films such as Fight Club and and The Illusionist – to a certain part he even cast that weird ‘presence’ of his over The Italian Job, but thankfully the rest of an excellent cast was able to balance the story out
