Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End took over the top spot at the weekend box office with receipts totaling $112.5 million (all figures US) for a total gross of $126.6 million. However, this was lower than expected, considering that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest opened last year with $135.6 million. Also, Shrek the Third took in $121.6 for its debut last weekend, while Spider-Man 3 broke records with an opening of $151.1 million earlier this month, though it was released in fewer theaters than the current Pirates film. Shrek the Third dropped to second this week, earning an additional $51 million for a total of $201 million. Spider-Man 3 passed the $300 million mark in its fourth weekend of release, earning an additional $13.7 million. Bug earned 3.3 million in fourth place, while the independent film Waitress rounded out the top five with $3 million.
