Pitch Perfect now available on Blu-Ray/DVD

Starring Anna Kendrick of Twilight fame, Pitch Perfect is a fresh, highly entertaining comedy with a finger-snapping musical beat. Kendrick plays Beca, a college student who would rather be heading to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a music producer. Her divorced father, a professor at the school, has convinced Beca to attend college first, but she does so reluctantly. A loner by nature, when she’s discovered singing in the shower room, another student (Brittany Snow) who’s in an a capella group called The Bellas, in a highly entertaining scene, convinces Beca to join.

Kendrick, as always, turns in an incredible performance. As Beca she’s funny, witty and just plain likeable. She’s an actress who completely grabs the audience’s attention, even when she mutters under her breath. Newcomer Skylar Astin, who has an extensive musical theater background, plays a student who joins the male a capella group and who falls for Beca.

The musical numbers are extremely catchy (except when they’re supposed to be pathetic, as in The Bellas’ early performances). Rebel Wilson, who played Kristen Wiig’s hilarious roommate in Bridesmaids, is unforgettable. Her name in the movie is “Fat Amy,” and that’s how she introduces herself, telling the leaders of The Bellas, “So twig bitches like you don’t do it behind my back,” in an upbeat tone.

The DVD/Blu-ray combo comes with not only a digital copy but an ultraviolet copy that can be streamed and downloaded to tablets, smartphones, computers and TVs. Bonus features include deleted and extended scenes, feature commentaries, a music video, a look inside the movie and Line-O-Rama, a funny selection of bloopers and ad libs. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Other DVD/Blu-Rays releasing this week include: Total Recall, Trouble with the Curve, The Intouchables, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, Beasts of the Southern Wild and 10 Years. For a full list of this week’s DVDs, click here.
