Pixar Canada closing its doors

The Canadian branch of Pixar Animation Studios in Vancouver is closing. “As we look at the creative and business needs of our studio, we’ve made the decision to refocus our efforts and resources under one roof in Emeryville,” the California-based company said in a statement. The Canadian branch had been in operation since 2010 and was known for producing short films such as Small Fry, Partysaurus Rex and Air Mater. These shorts premiered before Disney and Pixar movies such as Finding Nemo 3D and The Muppets. Following this announcement Pixar has taken down the Pixar Canada website and linked it to the American website Pixar.com. This announcement came as a surprise because many production companies are drawn to Canada for tax incentives and other Canadian animation branches have thrived. One of these companies is Sony’s Canadian animation Studio, which helped developed features such as Hotel Transylvania, The Smurfs 2 and Oz the Great and Powerful. ~ Brie Davis

This is probably due to the non-film friendly Liberal government in B.C. Much better tax incentives are available in Toronto and Montreal. Vancouver’s film industry has been pretty well gutted by the incompetence and short-sighted policies of the Liberals, in favor of resource heavy investment (i.e. big oil, gas, etc.) They’d much rather pollute the environment and do favors for their corporate backers than invest in an industry that leaves a much smaller carbon footprint and brings in untold millions to the economy. Stupidity reigns supreme!
