Roman Polanski‘s lawyers are asking a California court to drop a statutory rape charge against the director. He was charged in 1977 with perversion, sodomy and rape by use of drugs and pled guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. However, after his conviction, Polanski fled the country for France, where he has continued to make films. The young victim, Samantha Gailey, described the incident afterwards, saying, “It was not consensual sex by any means… It was very scary and, looking back, very creepy.” Lawyers for the French-Polish filmmaker claim that a recent documentary about him — Roman Polanski: Wanted And Desired — shows that the legal process was unfair and they have asked for a “complete dismissal of the case” so he can return to the United States to work. A hearing is scheduled on January 21st.
