Prisoners star Maria Bello has come out to the world using the form of an op-ed in Friday’s issue of the New York Times. Using the newspaper as an outlet, the 46-year-old actress tells how she first came out to her son Jackson, 12, whom she has with her ex-boyfriend, producer Dan McDermott. The first time Jackson asked whether his mother was romantically involved with someone, Maria immediately thought it was a good time to bring up the subject. Although hesitant, she revealed to her son that she was in a relationship with her girlfriend Clare, whom she’d met three years earlier at a bar. She wrote of the moment she realized she was attracted to Clare: “We had an immediate connection but didn’t think of it as romantic or sexual. She was one of the most beautiful, charming, brilliant and funny people I had ever met, but it didn’t occur to me, until that soul-searching moment in my garden, that we could perhaps choose to love each other romantically,” she describes.
After sharing her secret with her son, Maria was still hesitant of his reaction. After letting the news sink in, Jackson responded, “Mom, love is love, whatever you are.” She subsequently tweeted a photo of all four of them (including Dan) on November 29 with the caption: “Giving thanks for my modern family. Happy thanksgiving for whatever kind of family you have.” ~Brie Davis
