Radcliffe outwits paparazzi

By Alexandra Heilbron on July 11, 2007 | 28 Comments

Daniel RadcliffeHarry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe says he tricked the paparazzi, who waited outside the theater every night when he was appearing in Equus. He says: They (the paparazzi) were outside the theater every single night, but we came up with a cunning ruse. I would wear the same outfit every time—a different T-shirt underneath, but I’d wear the same jacket and zip it up so they couldn’t see what I was wearing underneath, and the same hat. So they could take pictures for six months, but it would look like the same day, so [the photos] became unpublishable. Which was hilarious, because there’s nothing better than seeing paparazzi getting really frustrated.”

He’s certainly full of himself; what a pompous twit.

that does work! but it’s funny to see the paparazzi get mad for someone to be wearing the same jacket and hat every single day except for the clothes underneath. that’s one way of getting rid of them, and it works.

Yeah, but he’s got more money than all of us, so he can be a pompous twit and not have to care what people think.

    That is a good idea!

Harry Potter the porn star, how charming! He needs to put his clothes back on and fast. Some role model…

  6. maneater • July 11, 2007 @ 11:37 PM

whoa..porn star? he’s trying to establish himself as an actor and i think the play EQUUS was a perfect example. No one in the acting industry expects to become a role model and i think pressuring them to become role models for your children in rediculous. stop being lazy parents and be their role models for them instead of hoping that celebrities will do it for you. if you don’t like his choices as an actor to be nude on stage then thats your opinion but please keep your mouth shut. i give him all the credit in the world not only to for appearing naked in front of thousands at the tender age of 18 but also for not relying on Harry Potter to establish his acting credentials. way to go, Daniel.

“Not relying on Harry Potter to establish his acting credentials?!?!” What other films has he done?!!

It’s sad this kid’s handlers have seduced him into thinking taking your clothes off equates to great acting. Where are the parents??

  9. Hollie • July 13, 2007 @ 9:09 AM

It’s a shame that no one says “where are the parents” when kids are in extremely violent movies. Sex and nudity is natural and yet, people react as though it’s evil. People should be shielded from violence – perhaps the world would be a better place.

Regardless – Daniel got this trick from Robbie Williams, who wrote about it in his Autobiography, Feel. It is an incredibly smart trick.

Radcliffe’s ego is the biggest part of his anatomy.

You ppl can be so closed minded and immature, I realize its YOUR opinion but seriously it comes off as uptight, closed minded, the whole thing w/ him being nude, its in the part he was playing, it wasnt like it was a non-nude role and he asked to take his clothes off, its part of the role ppl. And as for Not relying on Harry Potter to establish his acting credentials, hes not, in the time that he does have between Harry Potter movies he tries to do other jobs, but if you were any kind of fan or even just a person in the know you would realize there isnt exactly a lot of time in between shootings for the Harry movies. Im sure once the series has finished filming we will see other great things from him and on a last note, I may not know him personally but in the interviews I have seen he comes off as kind, sweet, down to earth and quite level headed, not pompous or arrogant at all. I think some of you may be reading too much into it. A saying that is more true in todays times than ever before, Believe only half of what you see and none of what you hear and this is particularly true when it comes to celebrity, you dont know these ppl personally so how is it you think you know them FOR REAL at all. Ease off the celebrities, they are just ppl too.

I watched Daniel being interviewed by Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien and find him to be a very funny guy. His sense of humor is right up there with the best of them.

I’ve read the views of some people running him down, and I get the impression there is a lot of envy in their remarks.

  13. Anonymous • July 13, 2007 @ 1:18 PM

So, only acting in MOVIES that YOU watch can establish acting credentials. He’s acting on stage, in a play that is world renowned, and he’s doing an awesome job. But, let’s see, because he is taking his clothes off for scenes that were written that way, he’s a PORN STAR?

Get your heads out of the ground for once. There is no gratuitous nudity in Equus and he isn’t engaging in sexual activity or simulated sexual activity on stage. He’s a young actor who has made very wise choices in his career. Get over it.

And it was very cunning for him to be able to trick the paparazzi like that for that long.

stephanie, you don’t know these people either so your “opinion” is just as invalid as everyone else’s. Also, show some mercy and try not to be so long-winded…

I’d say Daniel is one of the three sexiest men in the entire world, just behind Stephen Colbert and Clay Aiken. He’s so cut he’d be doing a disservice by keeping his clothes on when he performs.

  16. nikki • July 13, 2007 @ 3:07 PM

GO DANIEL! I think what he is doing is very funny! Actually, Daniel is a very nice guy with a very good sense of humor! In his interviews he shows such excitement and nervousness, just like the normal guy he is! Everyone should shove off and be nice and civilized for once in your lives!
Way to go, Daniel! Don’t listen to haters! Be happy with what you have accomplished, because it is already way more than some will accomplish in their entire lives! XD

He thinks he’s so much better than everyone else, and he isn’t.

  18. Rhoda • July 13, 2007 @ 7:20 PM

I don’t think it’s appropriate for Harry Potter to be the first naked man my children see!!!!!

  19. Andrea • July 13, 2007 @ 8:18 PM

Why are you letting your kids see Equus? It gives us all reason to ponder your parenting abilities…

I do not know why the negetative comments on this…I think it is a smart idea…a fan who would want to take a photo for him or herself would not care what Daniel was wearing…But I think they should ask first…manners matter….and the paparazzi…well I do not agree with them hounding people…and I go on record to say that I never buy any magazine that even appears that the photos were taking without permission …I figure that is a good way to put them out of business….

  21. Pamela • July 14, 2007 @ 12:40 AM

So, according to Barkeep and others here, Daniel is a pompous twit because he found a way to outwit the paparazzi, who are relentless in their pursuit of a moneymaking photo? Well, I’m sure that if any of you naysayers found yourself constantly being followed and hounded, you’d want to find a way to make it backfire as well.

I say “Good on ya Daniel!”. You have the right to decide when a photo should be allowed…and who should take it.

As for his role in Equus…it’s exactly that…a role. It’s not what he does in his personal life. If you don’t approve, don’t attend. It’s as simple as that. I have yet to see a single HP movie, but I believe that every artist has the right to learn and grow in their craft…and that’s exactly what Mr. Radcliffe is doing.

Having been extremely disappointed with the last couple films, I wouldn’t mind if they took a break from making the Potter movies until Steven Spielberg is available to do them right.

  23. josh • July 14, 2007 @ 4:49 PM

way to go daniel anything to get rid of those stupid paparazzi

  24. Karin • July 14, 2007 @ 7:53 PM

I just heard about him being naked in the play he’s in, but I think that he chose the role to show people different styles of acting he can do. As to one of the previous comments, Daniel is in an upcoming movie called December boys, which I think looks very good. Again I’ve seen interviews with Conan O’Brien and he seems like the nicest person you could ever meet. He seems very down to earth and funny. I don’t think he thinks he’s better than anyone else, I think it’s just a big misconception. i think that what he did with the paparazzi was a good idea. He’s also a (from what you hear) good guy. I know on Conan he said he wasn’t going to do anything big for is 18th birthday because he didn’t want people reading about. At least he has class.

  25. THE BEARDED AVENGER! • July 15, 2007 @ 1:01 AM

Given how much they’re paying him for the last two films, it’s a good bet he’ll bare all in a few scenes.

  26. stephanie • July 15, 2007 @ 10:02 AM

Stephanie, you dont know these people either so your opinion is just as invalid as everyone elses. Also, show some mercy and try not to be so long-winded

This coming from someone named I JUST FARTED
besides I do realize that it is just MY opinion and Im by no means saying mine is right or wrong but Im not a hater, I dont go around hating, so a nice opinion is much more interesting to listen to than a negative one, your right I dont know them but I @ least pay attention to interviews and articles of them and have a much clearer picture than most on here seem to have. I THINK in my OPNION that most ppl dont bother to find out the facts before making a decision on someone.
Why do haters feel the need to spread hate, use your energies to do something constructive like saving the environment.

  27. Bermuda Bart • July 15, 2007 @ 10:59 AM

Stephanie, you are the most boring critic I’ve ever had the displeasure of reading. If you can’t come up with better material, keep your “opinions” to yourself!

  28. Bill Meadows • July 16, 2007 @ 2:05 AM

Stephanie is the sort who always has a soapbox just to make her feel taller.
