Ricky Gervais says his Mel Gibson joke was vetoed

By Alexandra Heilbron on January 14, 2011 | 7 Comments

During an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show, Golden Globe host Ricky Gervais revealed which celebrities he’ll be targeting during the ceremony. “Charlie Sheen has obviously put his head above the parapet,” he told Ellen. “Like last year, Mel Gibson was a gift from the comedy god. So yeah, that’d be two good people out of the audience.” When Ellen asked if he worried about anyone coming after him after the show, he replied, “Well, I only go after the weak and feeble. I’m not going to have a go at Russell Crowe or Mickey Rourke. Mickey Rooney, maybe. Betty White — I’m not scared of her.” He told talk show host Conan O’Brien that one of his ideas for an opening skit had been vetoed by NBC bosses. He explained, ‘I wanted to come out dressed as Adolf Hitler with a little moustache, just doing that and waving to them and get to the podium doing that and just go, ‘too much?'” He adds that when his outfit didn’t get any applause, he was going to say, “That’s the last time I borrow a suit from Mel Gibson.” The Golden Globes will be broadcast Sunday night on NBC from 5:00-8:00 PST/8:00-11:00 EST. ‘

I love Ricky Gervais’ humour. Looking forward to the Globes, only because of him.

That’s hysterical! Too bad they wouldn’t let him do it, but I’m sure he’ll come up with other good stuff, he’s so funny.

That was genius!!!!!!! Awesome idea and I think that it would have actually caused a stir but we ALL would have laughed and understood it. I like that he seems to be putting his own jokes and humour into it and not relying solely on writers for him. I might actually watch now.

The Golden Globes are over and while I love Ricky Gervais and the shows he’s created, I thought he was really quite too harsh and mean…I don’t know. Yes, I laughed but it was with a cringe.
