Robert Pattinson to play lover of former movie mother

By Alexandra Heilbron on May 24, 2010 | 9 Comments

Although Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson is only 10 years younger than Reese Witherspoon, he made his film debut playing her son in Vanity Fair in 2004, when he was 17 and she was 27. The film followed Reese’s character through 20 years of her life, so she was playing older than 27 at the time. Fast forward six years, and the two are playing lovers in a new movie called Water for Elephants, which began filming this week. Robert plays a nearly graduated veterinary student during the Great Depression whose parents have just died in a car crash, leaving behind massive debt. He quits school and is hired by a circus to care for the animals. There, he meets Marlena (Reese), who does an equestrian act and is married to the abusive animal trainer. Should be interesting — don’t they make a cute couple?

I do like most of her movies though, she seems to pick up good scripts which makes me think this movie might have some possiblity of being good.

This movie is an adaptation of the book of the same name “Water for Elephants”. Please read and then give your opinion.

I just read the book, I didn’t really like it, too much cruelty towards innocent people and animals. But in the book Reese’s character is only 21. Robert’s character is 23, so he’s the right age, but I don’t know why they didn’t get someone the appropriate age to play Marlena.
