Ryan Gosling’s new film booed at Cannes

By Tribute on May 23, 2013 | 12 Comments

Ryan Gosling teamed up with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn once again for the new movie Only God Forgives – but when it screened at the Cannes Film Festival this week, the audience, which was made up mostly of critics, booed. The film includes extremely gruesome and violent scenes of torture, dismemberment and violation that disturbed audiences, and there were reports of viewers leaving the cinema during the screening. Many took to Twitter to express their distaste and mixed feelings about the film, and some called Gosling’s violent character boring due to his lack of speech. Despite the criticism, Refn defended his love of graphic violence at the Cannes press conference, saying, “Art is an act of violence. Art is about penetration… I approach things very much like a pornographer. It’s about what arouses me. And certain things turn me on more than other stuff, and I can’t suppress that… I have surely a fetish for violent emotion and violent images and I can’t explain where it comes from.” ~Sarah Dos Santos

Sounds like a complete degenerate. And we wonder why there’s so much violence in our society? Because we go to the movies to watch this kind of crap.

Sad but true. Is censorship so bad when compared to this?

    Janice… STFU.

Bernie, I expect nothing less than comments like that from people who are “turned on” by violence. Have a nice day.

Will we be surprised in the future when something happens because of his fetishes?

The only good things about Drive was the great acting from Albert Brooks and Bryan Cranston. It was slow and boring overall, and tried too hard to be artsy and edgy. Am never seeing a Refn movie again.

@JN – that’s one opinion on Drive, I suppose. Another would be that it was artistic, suspenseful, and creative. The soundtrack was perfect for the feel of the story and I thought that it was an excellent movie. Can’t speak for ‘Only God Forgives’ though – will have to reserve judgement.

It’s a violent movie, so what. It surely isn’t going to please everyone. Before we go off on the movies being a problem I’d like to remind you that we’ve been offing each other for all kinds of reasons since …. well forever so relax. One less violent movie in the world isn’t going to make a difference. I’m actually looking forward to this one. whether I find it a great work of art or a complete violent mess remains to be seen. Nothing against the critics but don’t take them at their word, make up your own mind.

    Peace out

Lol Bernie. My issue is, they shouldn’t blame or sensor rap music when there’s movies that are violent in nature that isn’t condemned by the public. My example is a womens group protesting Reebok to drop Rick Ross for an insensitive lyric to woman.

I don’t have an opinion on this Ryan Gosling movie as I don’t watch these types of movies in the theatres. Also, i believe everyone has the right to watch it or not to watch it.

If the film is that disturbing perhaps that is why Gosling wasn’t there plus he has said he was stepping back from acting and re-assessing his work. No doubt he’s scratching his head, wondering how did I go from being a lover to being part of this sht. Too bad – he’s such a talented actor.

@Well…. This is the best comment I see here. You are completely right. Violence was around way longer than they’ve been making movies. I am so sick and tired of people blaming the entertainment industry for the stupid, idiotic, irresponsible choices that people make. I too am looking forward to making up my own mind about this movie. There are quite a few movies that the critics praise that are absolute crap so yes people, you have minds of your own so how about using them and judge for yourselves. If you don’t want to see it then that is your right, if you do want to then that is your right as well.

Some people love these type of movies and some will not. Don’t let a bunch of old rich uptight critics decide for you. There are tons of people who worked hard on this movie. Booing at Cannes is so unprofessional. I will still watch this movie.
