Ryan Reynolds gives Denzel Washington a black eye

Denzel Washinton may play a tough guy on the big screen but in real life, the 57-year-old actor has never experienced a black eye — till he met Ryan Reynolds on the set of their new action movie Safe House. In the film, Reynolds plays a young CIA agent hired to watch over Washington, a dangerous fugitive on the run. “I’ve never had a black eye in my life,” Washington recently told reporters. “There’s a scene where I reach over to try to choke him while I have handcuffs on. We were flying around in the car. It just happened that as I was reaching forward he was flying back … and POW.” Reynolds couldn’t help but feel flushed for punching such an esteemed actor in the face. “That was my early retirement. I’ve given Denzel Washington a black eye and I should probably go home,” he said, adding, “I’m glad I was your first. If it had to be anyone, it was an apologetic Canadian.”

Catch all the action when Safe House hits theaters on February 10.
