Sam Smith: Soccer great David Beckham would be interesting Bond

Sam Smith Musician Sam Smith thinks that superstar soccer player David Beckham would be an ”interesting” James Bond.

The 23-year-old singer has recorded the theme for the next installment of the ever-popular spy franchise, Spectre, and believes the retired soccer star would make a very handsome leading man, following speculation linking him to the role.

He said: ”That would be interesting, that’s all I’ll say – that would be very interesting. He’d look fit for sure! He looks amazing in a suit.”

Sam was offered the Bond theme over a year ago, and has also said that he would like to see Ellie Goulding follow in his footsteps and record the next iconic song for the film series, having previously tipped her to get the Spectre theme in a bid to play down the circulating rumours that he was recording the track.

He told OK!: ”I felt really bad and I have to apologise because I never said that Ellie was doing it. I just heard rumours so when I was asked, ‘Who do you think should do it?’ I was like, ‘Well I heard Ellie Goulding was doing it’. I never meant to put her in it.”

”She would 100 per cent be the best person for it, so hopefully next time she’ll do it.”

Handsome, yes. Interesting until he opens his mouth. Nothing against Beckham: he is certainly a success at what he does (did), but he has never come across as being intelligent or particularly suave, despite the couture, and not the right kind of tough. I may be wrong, but given how he normally speaks, I can only hear dialogue being delivered in a wooden monotone. No thanks.

Apropos Sam Smith: talented, impressive range, but this new Bond theme isn’t very Bondian. It sounds more as though it should be sung over the end credits. It’s not punchy, powerful or particularly memorable. It follows the general tradition of alternating good/bad Bond themes. I expected something more compelling, in view of the hearkening back to the days of iconic Bond themes that was “Skyfall”. Shirley Bassey could have sung it, it was so good.
