Shailene Woodley talks Divergent, Hunger Games comparisons

Divergent star Shailene Woodley has opened up about her role as Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior in the upcoming adaptation of Veronica Roth’s young adult novel. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 21-year-old actress admits that she almost passed on the coveted role, saying, “My agents were like, ‘Are you f—ing crazy?’ But I said if this movie is successful, things will change and I don’t want that.” It took support from her mother and her The Descendants director Alexander Payne before Shailene finally decided to take on the project. As for comparisons to fellow dystopian heroine Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games, Woodley argues that Tris is too different to compare. “What I like about Tris is that she’s isn’t perfect. She’s not a superhero—she’s not Katniss. She doesn’t know how to shoot a bow and arrow, she’s not a badass by nature,” she explained. Divergent arrives in theaters March 21, 2014. ~Alfonso Espina
