Sherlock Holmes debuts at weekend box office with $40 million

The top three movies at this past weekend’s box office were all sequels: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr., debuted in the top spot, earning $39.6 million (all figures U.S.). Tribute.ca visitors rated it 4.2 stars out of a possible 5 stars. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked opened in second place, taking in $23.2 million and earning 4 stars. Although it was released only to IMAX theaters this past weekend, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol pulled in $12.8 million, putting it in third place. The movie, which stars Tom Cruise, opens in wide release this Wednesday. The holiday movie New Year’s Eve dropped from the top spot to fourth place in its second weekend, earning $7.3 million. Tribute.ca users gave it 3.25 stars. Last weekend’s second place movie, The Sitter, rounded out the top five with an additional $4.6 million.
