Director James Cameron confirms that he will reunite with actress Sigourney Weaver for three sequels to the original sci-fi fantasy epic, Avatar, in which the female action star played the role of Dr. Grace Augustine. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron commented, “Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Alien. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.
The scripts for all three films are also being written simultaneously, albeit by three separate writers, and will be filmed back-to-back. Also expected to return are stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang. Each of the three untitled Avatar sequels is expected to hit theaters annually starting in December 2016. ~Daniel Horowitz
