Smith Angry over Hitler Comment

Will SmithAfter a firestorm caused by a comment made by Will Smith, the Anti-Defamation League has accepted his clarification. Smith was recently quoted in the Daily Record saying, “Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘Let me do the most evil thing I can do today.’ I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good.’” The quote was used to prove the journalist’s hypothesis that Smith believes everyone is basically good, but some celebrity sites have interpreted it to mean that Smith believes Hitler was a good person. “It is an awful and disgusting lie,” Smith said in a statement. “It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person with a pen. I am incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such ludicrous misinterpretation.”

Will Smith is a smart person. Tabloid crap journalism tries to make controversy out of everything. The anti-defamation league is a bunch of babies looking to make themselves relavant. Get a real job and let people speak for themselves.

  2. Nancy • December 27, 2007 @ 8:00 PM

Exactly! This happens on this website too. When people have their own opinion and speak their mind, there is always someone waiting to twist everything they have said around!!

  3. Scott • December 27, 2007 @ 8:56 PM

Desperate journalists looking to get more readers or web site hits. Will made a good point and you would have to be a complete fool to misinterpret it.

  4. Nancy • December 28, 2007 @ 1:01 AM

Back-stabbing shit disturbers more like it!!!

Anyone with a brain should be able to understand the comment – “Even Hitler, in his own warped mind, thought he was doing good.” Will Smith was just speaking above the intelligence factor of this reporter!

  7. Anonymous • December 28, 2007 @ 9:48 AM

He is quite right – anyone with a brain can understand Will’s point – in the eyes of GOD everyone is GOOD – no one wakes up saying I “am going to commit evil” – something has to happen to trigger that form of action – and the master of the pen of the reporter intention is to create hate and animosity towards WILL SMITH – Will is right – spending time responding is a waste of time.

  8. Natasha • December 28, 2007 @ 9:59 AM

What is the Brangelina thing running dry for the media? – they now have to find something or someone else – of course.

  9. Shawn • December 28, 2007 @ 10:23 AM

I just hate it when words get all twisited. You really cannot say anything these days for the fear of misinterpretation. Some of these journalists should go back to school and learn to read or listen a little better i think.I think maybe some of you guys and girls are right, maybe this was just to stir up some shit for no good reason.

  10. Anony • December 28, 2007 @ 11:06 AM

    Go back to Scientology…

  11. Anonymous • December 28, 2007 @ 11:08 AM

The thing that bothers me is even if he did like Hitler, so what it’s not anyone else’s business anyways.

Note the “if” I’m not saying he does like Hitler.

  12. crappy • December 28, 2007 @ 11:44 AM

I read/heard once that Will Smith is one of the few young black men that American’s don’t fear. I guess they tried to stir up some fear.
Good for him to respond so eloquently and for the league to accept his clarification.
I’m glad I’m Canadian and don’t see much ridiculous Entertainment controversy.

  13. sno-dogg • December 28, 2007 @ 11:51 AM

it was a cheap shot and if it there anyone else nothing would come of it but he’s a big star so they will try to pull cheap shots every chance they get so go do a real story instead of making something out of nothing.

  14. anonomyous • December 28, 2007 @ 11:57 AM

I’d hate to be in the position of a celeberty, having everyone following me taking pictures of me, my kids, my house, etc… I don’t want some jerk reporting on how I washed my child’s hands at the park, and I don’t want to announce to the world that I’m pregnant. Nor do I want the whole world to be judgemental on how skinny I am, or calling me fat when I’m a size 4! Unfortunately, Mr. Smith, because he’s talented and loved, has to put up with this kind of crap. If I were him I’d shove that pen so far up ther reporter’s ass that he’d taste ink! Can you imagine what our world would be like if all of the most talented people in the world just stopped working to stop all this controversy? I support him & I hope he continues sharing his talent with us for years to come.

  15. Anonymous • December 28, 2007 @ 12:43 PM

    Well Will is right.

  16. Anonymous • December 28, 2007 @ 12:49 PM

i understand what he said and there is more evil in the world that reporter should reading about and leave will smith alone

  17. Leelee • December 28, 2007 @ 1:05 PM

Once again the media has twisted someones words to portray them in an unflattering light. Anytime I have seen Will Smith interviewed I am impressed by his compassion, love of family, work ethic, and humour. It is fairly obvious by the other comments on this thread that none of us are that easily fooled by the crap written by people looking to sell a few more magazines.

  18. Cliff Adams • December 28, 2007 @ 1:37 PM

I was curious to see the article in its entirety, so I took a few minutes to read the interview of the comment everyone is talking about.

Dec 22 2007 By Siobhan Synnot

Well, who ever it is that took Wills statement out of context and is now trying to exploit this young mans reputation for magazine sales should not only be FIRED as a reporter, Will should sue their asses off, then and ask the Judge to force this IDIOT reporter back to journalism school, or at least a 1 year course in English Literture.

I wish I was half the man Will Smith is. His compassion to his family and fans is intoxicating.

Will made this comment in the same interview: “I wake up every day full of hope, positive that every day is going to be better than yesterday. And I’m looking to infect people with my positivity. I think I can start an epidemic.”

    Will, you already have!

  19. sk8tergirl • December 28, 2007 @ 2:11 PM

    I agree with Anonymous.

  20. Anonymous • December 28, 2007 @ 2:18 PM

The fact that we al clicked on this link to read the report really speaks to how well we thnk of Will Smith as a person. If the title line had said ” supports Hitler” I would have nevr clicked on the article.

I’m sorry Will had to defend himself. He did nothing wrong. I feel his original statement was accurate.

  21. Anonymous. • December 28, 2007 @ 2:19 PM

Don’t mess with Will Smith you will get burned. He is one of the kindess person out there.. No brownie points for you.

  22. Anonymous • December 28, 2007 @ 5:52 PM

what will says is right if u look back in history there was error in hitlers thinking. but i do believe when he first set out it was to make germany strong theres always been racism there will always be people like him. thanksfully the good people outweigh the bad. so take off ur asshats and think for yourselves people.

  23. dwd2 • December 28, 2007 @ 7:06 PM

Who the hell cares what Will Smith has to say about ANYTHING????

  24. Josee • December 28, 2007 @ 9:01 PM

No way!! Will Smith is the best actor with no bad backround. Just leave him alone he’s the best and funniest person. Will Smith you’re the best and continue the way you are.

  25. Tawny • December 28, 2007 @ 10:43 PM

This is more clarification that North Americans pay too much tribute to what celebrities say and do. They are just people who say good and ridiculous things from time to time. Do YOUR best and stop judging.

  26. Mel • December 28, 2007 @ 11:53 PM

Will Smith made an interesting and depthful comment about someone the entire world understands to get his point across. He could have used any “evil” person in history as an example, the name of the example wasn’t as important as the message he was trying to make.

Everyone out there spends everyday doing what they belive is right in their mind… this includes priests, rapists, firefighters, and Hitler… how hard is that to understand?

Whomever decided to twist this comment into something slanderous, and whomever he/she reported it to that thought the idea had merit, should take a good look at their priorities and decide what they truly believe is right!

It really makes you wonder what our world is coming to.

  27. Anonymous • December 29, 2007 @ 1:11 AM

Who is/are these so called journalist(s)? Did they go to school and took journalism? There’s nothing wrong with Will’s analogy. Will DID NOT SAY that Hitler is good. Whoever this so called Journalist, may ask, “Do you know what Metaphor means????” Maybe Will’s analogy is too deep for this journalist and he can’t understand.

  28. Nancy • December 29, 2007 @ 6:59 AM

I think they are all just having a “bad day” and like to take good people down with them!

click my name if you think your day was bad 🙂

  29. Huh • December 29, 2007 @ 4:23 PM

Since when did Will Smith grow a brain and learn to use such big words? He didn’t speak like that on Fresh Prince of Bel Air!

  30. Huh • December 29, 2007 @ 4:25 PM

Oh wait, that’s probably his wife’s words. That makes more sense.

Why was Will Smith talking about Hitler in the first place? Did it have something to do with his movie?

  31. Teresa • December 29, 2007 @ 4:42 PM

Ok now I really do find this kinda odd. Will Smith is a great actor I find, now I don’t exactly know why the comment was made but if people know the type of person and sence of humor that Will Smith has then they would understand what he meant. NOw on the subject of Hitler I really do believe myself that Hitler in his own mind was doing good for the people, let me quote again “in his own mind”. I really highly doubt that even Will Smith would Support Hitler and his actions I mean face it Hitler hated anyone who wasn’t white, And I have to commend Will Smith for saying that he belives that their is good in everyone, cause yes even though there are people out there that do bad things, there is still good in these people somewhere. Hey people don’t agree with what I just said thats their prob not mine. OH and by the way Will Smith and I also share the same birthday hehe LOL. What can I say I love the man. Learn to read between the lines people instead of making judgements right away.

  32. Anonymous • December 29, 2007 @ 5:50 PM

i completely agree with what will smith has said. he is a very smart individual

  33. me • December 29, 2007 @ 7:50 PM

So, I guess this means some of you think that Bin Ladin believes what he is doing/has done is right and good? Sick. And scary. Well, it’s probably true that these sicko’s believe that. Good thing we are all too smart to believe the media when they try to paint people like Will Smith as fans of Hitler.

  34. Mark • December 29, 2007 @ 8:56 PM

    Responding to “me”…

Terrorists believe what they are doing is right and good. The victims of terrorism probably don’t agree.

The United States government believes the war in Iraq is right and good. The Iraqi people generally don’t agree.

Everyone’s definition of good will not necessarily be the same as yours. That’s not scary. That’s normal.

What’s truly scary is that the people of the world haven’t evolved to become tolerant enough of each other’s views and help each other to be the best they can be. Journalists who misunderstood or twisted the original quote from Will Smith aren’t helping.

    Thanks for thinking, people.

  35. Nancy • December 30, 2007 @ 3:47 AM

    Responding to Mark:

“Everyone’s definition of good will not necessarily be the same as yours. That’s not scary. That’s normal.”

Normal? Normal? Are you f*cking joking??? I don’t know where your f*cking “NORMAL” planet is but I think it’s time you get off the crack man!! You think that teenagers walking into a school with a bunch of guns, blowing students, teachers and employees away is “normal”, “good”?? You think that killing people, cutting up their bodies, freezing them and then eating them is “normal”, “good”?? Oh, how about this one….sending someone an envelope with a few grains of powder in it, so that when they open it and breathe it in, they bleed to death or their skin and flesh start to rot away…..pretty normal, huh? What about all those f*cking child molesters out there? You have kids Mark? Maybe in their own TWISTED f*cking minds they believe what they are doing is right, but these things will never be “NORMAL”. I believe in everyone having their own opinion, but come on Mark, honestly…you need a psychiatrist!!

  36. PeaceOut • December 30, 2007 @ 7:15 AM

Perhaps this so-called “journalist’s” credentials need to be checked. Clearly not nearly as educated, informed and articulate as the ever-so Mr. Will Smith. At least he doesn’t have to worry that the REST of the intelligent world (aside from the anti-defamation idiots) understood.

  37. PeaceOut • December 30, 2007 @ 7:20 AM

    TO: Nancy

I think you misinterpreted Mark’s comments, in the same way that this journalist and the anti-defamation league misinterpreted Will Smith’s.

    TO: Me

We all start out as babies, with nothing but our parents (if we’re lucky) to help us grow healthy. We also all start out good.

  38. likeit1 • December 30, 2007 @ 12:05 PM

    Will Smith? Never.

  39. me • December 30, 2007 @ 3:01 PM

    To Mark and PeaceOut:
Well, Golly. Aren’t you two just ever so insightful. Wow. Thanks for opening my eyes, I would never have known if it wasn’t for your incredible wisdom.
But…hey, wait a minute, what about Paul Bernardo? Are you saying when he raped and killed his then-girlfriends 16 year old sister on Christmas eve in her parents basement, he thought he was doing a good, normal thing? And the other girls he kidnapped, raped, otherwise tortured, killed, and dismembered, you are saying he (and Carla) thought that was all good and normal? If so, why did they hide the parts in cement blocks and dump them in a river?
Yes, we are all born innocent, some people end up with mental illnesses, some people are raised to be bad. But Mark, come on man, get a clue, some people actually DO get their kicks from terrorizing people.

  40. me • December 30, 2007 @ 3:07 PM

Oh, and Mark, regarding the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. When it began, was anyone in the Western part of the world dancing in the streets and cheering because innocent people were dying? No. When the Twin Towers in New York came down killing thousands of innocent people, there were thousands in the Middle East out there dancing and cheering in the streets.
May we all please have your insight into this, oh wize one?

  41. Nancy • December 30, 2007 @ 6:45 PM

    To PeaceOut:

I’m sure I did NOT misinterpret Marks’ comment! Just 5 of his words….they cannot be misinterpreted!

“That’s not scary. That’s normal.” is what Mark said. So please enlighten me, and tell me how I misinterpreted that???

Now, speaking of idiots who misinterpret things…..PeaceOut, READ THE FREAKIN’ ARTICLE AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE!!!! The journalist was not the one who misinterpreted Mr. Smith….it was ‘some celebrity sites’!!

  42. Nancy • December 30, 2007 @ 6:48 PM

The world is full of sickoes – but the worst of it is that there are even sicker people out there who think that the “sickoes” can be rehabilitated and released back into the general population!!

  43. Nancy • December 30, 2007 @ 6:55 PM

Oh, and I am very sorry about all the swears in my comment above. I’m sure the Tribute Police will remove it first thing Monday morning. Thanks coppers!!! LOL

  44. Nancy • December 30, 2007 @ 8:28 PM

Oh, and I am very sorry for all the bad words in my comment above. I’m sure the Tribute Police will remove them first thing Monday morning. Thanks coppers!!! LOL

  45. me • December 30, 2007 @ 8:31 PM

Yes! Exactly! Those kinds of people should be locked up forever, or maybe, (gasp!imagine it, Mark!) Canada should bring back executions! Those people who do not care about other people’s safety and who would hurt any one of us without blinking an eye should never be free to roam the streets. And the bleeding hearts who want to rehabilitate them and get them back into the general population have obviously never been a victim.

  46. justme • January 1, 2008 @ 1:59 PM

actually in the eyes of God, all men are evil

it is only through the salvation act that any person can be seen as good, and that is imputed goodness by virtue of the sacrificial, intercessional blood of the Son

  47. me • January 2, 2008 @ 6:39 PM

Ok, for the record, “justme” is NOT, I repeat, NOT “me”. Man, “justme”, I sure hope you are being sarcastic! If not, you just might want to check yourself into the nearest emergency department, maybe even under police “security”, ok? I think it would be a very good idea. Hurry, now…

  48. Rad • January 19, 2008 @ 2:49 AM

Ha ha ha. “justme”, why so modest? I mean your name. What you say is very arrogant. All “men” are “evil”? I suppose you mean all humans, do you? This is simply demoralizing religious claptrap. Lots of us are not evil, justme and if your God is good, I’m sure She or He will agree. Watch out for religious brainwashing!
