Star Wars creator George Lucas chooses Chicago for museum

Although  George Lucas considered Los Angeles and San Francisco as possible sites for his Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which will contain art and movie memorabilia from the filmmaker’s lengthy career, Chicago was eventually chosen. Lucas is planning to open the museum in 2018. Star Wars fans may know Lucasfilm’s visual effects division is based in San Francisco and the headquarters for Lucasfilm and Skywalker Sound is located in Marin County, across from the Golden Gate Bridge. Lucas initially wanted to build the museum close to the Golden Gate Bridge but his request was refused by city officials. However, Chicago is also an ideal location as Lucas’ new wife Mellody Hobson was born and raised there. The couple is also grateful to the city as Promontory Point was closed so they could host a huge party there after their California wedding. ~Andrea Hodgins
