Rian Johnson, director of the upcoming Star Wars movie The Last Jedi, has been spilling the beans on the highly anticipated sci-fi film. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the filmmaker sheds light on information that fans have been speculating about for quite some time.
First off, it looks like the rumors are true. The newest planet introduced in the Star Wars galaxy will be called Canto Bight. Talk surrounding the planet has been spreading like wildfire since April, when the scenes were being filmed. Rian has revealed that Canto Bight will be “a playground for rich a**holes,” also mentioning that “it was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe.”
According to Rian, the planet will be the “Star Wars” take on a casino, where others can gamble. It remains to be seen how big of a role this new planet will play in the upcoming film, but we do know that Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) will make appearances on Canto Bight.
Rian also revealed the names of Benicio Del Toro‘s and Laura Dern’s characters in the movie, sharing some background information on their roles in the film. Benicio will play a “shady character” by the name of DJ, although we aren’t sure where his allegiance lies yet. Laura will play Vice Admiral Holdo, a prominent member of the Resistance.
Several images from set were also revealed, including Daisy Ridley holding a lightsaber and another where she is standing beside Chewbacca aboard the iconic spaceship named Millenium Falcon. Among the series of photos, we also get a first look at the planet Canto Bight, where we see many different creatures dressed up.
