Academy Award-winning director Sydney Pollack died Monday at the age of 73 following a year-long battle with cancer. Also an actor, his last appearance on the big screen was as Patrick Dempsey ‘s father in Made of Honor, currently in theaters. Pollack won an Oscar for Out of Africa, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, and was nominated for directing Tootsie, in which he also played Dustin Hoffman‘s agent. Pollack leaves behind his wife of 50 years, and two of their three children. A son, Steven, died in 1993 in a plane crash.
