Billboard has released part of its Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century list — and Taylor Swift is ranked in second place, which has her fans — known as “Swifties”– upset.
This week, Billboard released only the top nine names on the list. After Taylor, Rihanna was named third; Drake came in fourth; Lady Gaga was fifth; Britney Spears was sixth; Kanye West ranked seventh; Justin Bieber was eighth; while Ariana Grande, hot off her success in Wicked, ranked ninth; and Adele made the list in 10th place.
Although the Number 1 on the Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century list has not yet been revealed, it’s speculated that Beyoncé will be named soon. Swifties fervently believe that Taylor should get that honor. They have a point — considering how the two singers’ concert films, both released last year, had vastly different outcomes at the box office.
Taylor Swift’s concert film — Tayor Swift: The Eras Tour earned a whopping $180,756,268 domestically for a worldwide total of $261,656,269, while Beyoncé’s concert film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, earned only $33,889,683 domestically and just $43,989,684 worldwide.
They also noted that she’s the only singer to be a four-time winner of Album of the Year at the Grammys, and her Eras Tour is the highest-grossing tour in history. She was also ranked as the most played artist on Spotify in 2023.
Who do you think should be Number 1 on the Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century list? ~Alexandra Heilbron

Britney Spears credits the #FreeBritney movement as her conservatorship ends. She is grateful for the freedom and looking forward to a new chapter in her life.
Hard to believe Taylor isn’t number 1 ! Obviously , some biased opinions at Billboard.
Obviously Taylor Swift. Obviously other stuff going on behind the scenes manipulating things. Have issues with a couple of the other rankings also, but Taylir Swift not being #1 is ridiculous. Something odd is going on.
Swifty fans need to calm tf down, sheesh
The king of pop will always be Michael Jackson! Notice that I said king of pop, not greatest, like the article said. I never understood all of the hype around Taylor. I know that with her billion or billions of dollars that she has made, and the popularity, people believe that she should be number 1, but I just shake it off. The only song that I like of hers. I suppose that she is a good role model, etc., but I do not understand why she is any more popular than other singers. I believe that there are much better singers than she is. Some are on the list in the article. My opinion, which is my opinion. I like most music, including the ‘new’ stuff, so I am not just from an older generation, and not considering all. For example…of three versions of the movie A star is Born, I liked the Judy Garland one. I grew up with the Barbra one, and also watched the Lady Gaga one.
I have heard a lot of singers over the years and I feel that Taylor Swift is vastly overrated. How many teens and tweens will still be listening to her five years from now? Will her songs stand the test of time?
Taylor Swift is overrated and her music is bubble gum garbage for the stupid “period”.
Jeeze calm down you infantile fans of Taylor. Event the name Swifties is a testament to how ridiculous this is. No different for Beyonce and the so called Beehive. It’s just a list. Someone has to be first and many has to be “not first”. Don’t understand why people get triggered by any list (Basketball, Football, Tennis, Soccer, Rock, Rap, Pop, Track, Food, City), that does not have THEIR PERSONAL PICK at the top. Simple solution: make your own list and place your own fav at the top. Now if I judge “greatest” pop singer based on my perception of impact on public and the music genre I personally think the greatest pop star of the last 24 years – it’s the 21st century remember (most of Taylor Swift fands are hardly half that age) – IS Beyonce even if I am not a fan of all her music (and like her look, don’t like her personality). I think the greatest pop of the last 5 -10 years is without a doubt Taylor Swift (I like her but hate her music). Now my favorite pop singers are Rihanna (best all around package to me) and Adele (best voice to me). But while they would be MY greatest pop stars I am not gonna throw a fit if they get beat by Beyonce and Swift or whoever some music mag decides is THEIR greatest. See how this works people?
For comparison, greatest guitarist of all time (we into real music now folks not bubble gum and soda)? 1. Jimmy Hendrix 2. Jimmy Page 3. Prince 4. Eric Clapton 5. Eddie Van Halen. Honorable mention to Jeff Beck, BB King and Nile Rodgers. And no, Rolling Stones list wont trigger me, and I wont argue with their, or your, own choices.
Hate Taylor, Beyoncé totally deserves this honor as the single greatest and most talented entertainer in HISTORY !
Question is, what are they basing the ratings on, talent, popularity, or both. She’s obviously talented, but more of less than others on the list? She’s obviously the most popular. She has fans of all ages and makes a huge impact wherever she goes. If the rating is based on talent, then its an interesting discussion. If its popularity, then she wins. And what we as individuals think of her is a mute point. I like some of her music. And those that say its useless, probably haven’t really listened to her music. But I would have bet on her being #1, for all the reasons you mentioned. But there are all kinds of ratings and lists. Most are debatable. But whats not debatable on this list is who’s the most popular.
Taylor Swift is a stand up person with a compelling message and a sweet little girl voice but her musical talent doesn’t by any means deserve all the fervor it gets. Beyonc is a class act with outstanding talent. There’s depth to her voice and a beat to her songs that makes you want to move. O yeah. She’s number one.
Without a filter…Rob said it best!
Who cares who gets a sub category best-of by century if we include both centuries most of the population was alive for we would have a Best Pop Star of All Time & based on Cultural Impact, changing the concert experience from standing at a microphone into a full on Broadway-on-tour- spectacle, helping LGBTQ get assimilated into the culture which would have taken another 50 years, as well as women having the right over owning their sexuality and being allowed to want it too, as well as creating the whole idea of Eras in the first place with her Re-Inventions with every album both visually & sonicallythe Best of All Time is MADONNA, The Queen of Pop.
Without q doubt, Taylor Swift is #1. Beyonce is fair at best compared to Taylor. The rankings are stupid.
