Taylor Swift gives gift to school after prank

By Tribute on October 18, 2012 | 20 Comments

Singer Taylor Swift reached out with a $10,000 donation to Boston’s Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing after it was disqualified from a contest due to voters who thought it would be funny for the school to win a concert via Facebook. Here’s what happened: Papa John’s Pizza and textbook company Chegg co-sponsored the contest, in which the school with the most votes would win a live performance by Taylor. Initially, the votes for the school originated from a small group of people but after hearing about the mean-spirited prank, thousands joined in to vote for Horace Mann. It was eventually decided by the sponsors that the school was disqualified because of the way it got the votes. However, they, along with Taylor, donated $10,000 each to the school, as did CoverGirl and American Greetings for a total of $50,000. But that’s not all. VH1’s Save the Music program contributed an additional $10,000 worth of instruments and Swift is also giving each student at the school a ticket for her next local show. ~Luxy Hariharan

I guess she did not have to do anything but really…$10,000…she makes that every hour…nice but seams cheap to me…juz sayin’

it is not the monies she makes it is the fact that she acknowledged this and did something about it which encouraged others to join in and a ticket for each student a nice afterthought considering her age
    the young lady has class
more than can should so always nice to hear when someone does…others should educate themselves on the deaf.what they did it a form of bully ….

Maybe $10,000 isn’t a lot to her, but it’s a lot to them and that’s what counts. And I’m sure they’re not the only charity/school to get a bit of her money. She seems like a generous person.

10,000.00 is cheap?? maybe you should be donating a million since that’s just chump change to you buddy!

$10k or not, this was a classy move. See if it was a million, and this sort of thing happened every week, she would be broke. There is a limit to generosity, and in this instance, I think Swift did a really nice genuine thing.

I donate a car every year since 2002 to a youth farm drug rehab center…I purchase a new car and donate my used one…I have been told that over the 10 years my donations have generated more than $300,000. Plus I donate $2500 to the Salvation Army for Xmas…not to mention the local hospital, alzhiemers and heart and stroke foundations.

Shame on those pranksters. And good on Taylor for sticking it up to those bullies. These online harassment need to be stopped.

$10,000 is a lot of money and that school and those kids clearly deserve it.

I seriously doubt that she made this decision on her own. She has a powerful publicity team that are always on the look-out for ways to keep her name in the news to sell her music.

$10,000 is nothing compared to what she’ll receive from all the attention this publicity stunt will bring her.

Taylor Swift is generous and kind. Whether or not this was a publicity stunt, a school and a bunch of kids are better off because of her.

  19. Badgirl • October 20, 2012 @ 1:51 PM

Taylor Swift and CoverGirl both donate, and doesn’t Taylor shoot commercials for CoverGirl? seems to me like it’s a publicity stunt.

@Annie, in today’s day $10,000 doesn’t do shit for anybody.
