The Bad Guys beat down weekend box office competition

The animated new movie The Bad Guys featuring the voice talent of Sam Rockwell, Anthony Ramos, Craig Robinson and Awkwafina debuted at the top of the box office this weekend, pulling in a domestic total of $24 million.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starring Jim Carrey and James Marsden stayed in second place in its third weekend in theaters, earning an additional $15.2 million for a total of $145.8 million.
Last weekend’s top movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, dropped two spots to third. The third movie in the franchise, it took in an extra $14 million for a two-week total of $67.1 million.
The new movie The Northman, starring Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke and Nicole Kidman, debuted in the fourth spot, earning $12 million.
Rounding out the top five was another newcomer that opened on Friday — The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent starring Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself. The action/comedy took in $7.2 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
