The Butler leads weekend box office

Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey are the clear champs this weekend as Lee Daniels’ The Butler served up $25 million. The Oscar hopeful, which has a Tribute rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars, surprised many as it trumped newcomers such as Kick-Ass 2, Paranoia and jOBS. Raunchy comedy We’re The Millers held onto its second spot from last week with $17.8 million and a Tribute rating of 3.7 stars. Matt Damon and his team in Elysium fought away newcomers by taking third place at the box office and bringing in $13.6 million with a Tribute rating of 3.8 stars. Superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2, which was expected to whip up the first spot, opened this weekend in fourth, bringing in $13.57 million and the highest Tribute rating at 4 stars. Disney’s Planes rounded out the top five at the box office in its second week, taking in $13.1 million with a Tribute rating of 4.3 stars. Rounding out the top 10 are Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, which took sixth spot with $8.4 million and a Tribute rating of 4.3 stars and newcomer jOBS, which opened to $6.7 million and a rating of 3.3 stars. 2 Guns, The Smurfs 2 and The Wolverine also made the top ten this weekend. ~ Marriska Fernandes
