The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington was number one at the North American box office this weekend, grossing $35 million in its opening weekend. The action thriller about a former black ops agent who comes out of retirement to help a young girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) became the fourth highest opening weekend gross ever in the month of September and currently has a 3.2 star Tribute user rating. The Lord of the Flies-esque flick The Maze Runner (4.6 star Tribute user rating) earned $17.5 million in its second week, landing it in the runner up spot after enjoying the top spot last weekend.
Coming in at a very close third was the stop-motion animated film The Boxtrolls, starring Ben Kingsley and Game of Thrones actor Isaac Wright-Hempstead, which made just over $17 million in its opening weekend. The family-friendly film about a boy raised by creatures called Boxtrolls holds a perfect 5 star Tribute user rating.
Shawn Levy’s This is Where I Leave You (Tribute 4 star user rating) earned $7 million in its second week, followed by Dolphin Tale 2 (4.4 star Tribute user rating), which earned over $4.5 million in its third week since release and second week at number five. ~Kelly Townsend
