John Green’s best-selling book The Fault In Our Stars was inspired and dedicated to Esther Grace Earl, a 16-year-old girl who died from thyroid cancer on August 25, 2010 after a four-year battle. Even when her strength was waning and breathing became difficult, Esther wanted to communicate with others, creating an online presence through tweets and vlogs on YouTube. Esther and John met and bonded over Harry Potter and a group called nerdfighters. Esther’s humor and voice is said to echo in the new The Fault In Our Stars movie through the lead character Hazel Grace Lancaster, played by Shailene Woodley.
Esther’s story is now available through her handwritten journals in This Star Won’t Go Out, which includes an introduction by John. Asked about Esther’s book, John says, “If you want to know the real story behind the person who inspired so much of my novel, you have to read This Star Won’t Go Out. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking and full of the love and wit that made Esther such a wonderful person to be around.” It’s clear John and Esther share a bond that not even death can break. ~Andrea Hodgins
