The Hurt Locker triumphs at BAFTAs

The Hurt Locker won six BAFTA Film Awards in London last night. The war drama, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, won the most awards of the evening, including the coveted Best Film. Kathryn, the ex-wife of director James Cameron, beat her former husband in the Best Director category, while also picking up Best Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound and Editing awards. Although it was nominated for eight awards, Avatar won just two, for Special Visual Effects and Production Design. Colin Firth took home Best Actor for his performance in A Single Man. In his acceptance speech, Firth thanked his refrigerator repair man, explaining that he had been about to send an email rejecting an offer to star in the film when the man turned up to fix his appliance, giving him time to reconsider the film. “I was about to send this when a man came to repair my fridge… I don’t know what’s best for me so I would like to thank the fridge guy,” he said. “All I know is don’t ever press ‘send’ until you have had your fridge repaired.” Carey Mulligan won the Best Actress prize for her portrayal of a young schoolgirl swept away by a glamorous older man in An Education. She was thrilled with the accolade, especially after her recent revelation that she was rejected by three drama schools. Kristen Stewart was on hand to pick up the Orange Rising Star Award for her performances in movies including The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
