Top Gun director Tony Scott commits suicide

Director/producer Tony Scott committed suicide yesterday when he jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California. Several witnesses called 911 around 12:35 p.m. after they saw the man jump and authorities pulled his body a few hours later from the water below. A suicide note was reportedly found later in his office, although the contents of the note have not been revealed. While the incident is still being investigated, his spokesman, Simon Halls, has confirmed the sad news, saying in a statement, “I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time.” Scott, who died at the age of 68, was the younger brother of Prometheus director Ridley Scott and rose to fame with his 1986 feature Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise. He went on to helm a string of well-received action films, including 1998’s Enemy of the State staring Will Smith, 2004’s Man on Fire with Denzel Washington, the 2009 star-studded thriller The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and his most recent Denzel Washington/Chris Pine film, Unstoppable, in 2010. Scott is survived by his wife, Donna, and their twin sons, Frank and Max.

Great director, although I was not a fan of the shaky camera work and cut scenes he was using in his last few films, his movies were well paced and riveting in their dilevery.

It’s hard to understand how someone who seems like they have everything someone would want comes to this point, especially when you leave 2 young children behind. Only the person that commits the act really knows.

I’m very curious what could have lead to this.
Otherwise, I was asked to watch Top Gun tonight oddly enough because of an outdoor open-air drive in movie program in place here in Victoria. So, it’s (sadly), good timing to watch a great classic film he directed and pay respects.
