Toronto singer Melanie Fiona won 2 Grammys

Toronto R&B singer Melanie Fiona got a taste of the Grammys on Sunday after winning two awards. The 28-year-old won for her collaboration with Cee Lo Green on the hit records “Fool for You” and “The Lady Killer.” Fiona, honored to have won two awards, confessed that Whitney Houston was one of her biggest influences and that when she was a child, Houston’s voice was one of the first memories of music that she had. Nominated in the categories Best Traditional R&B performance and Best R&B Song, Fiona almost didn’t make it to the stage on time to accept her award. When she finally did, she thanked everyone back home in Canada and gave praise to Whitney Houston for her influence. Without Houston, Fiona says she would not have been a nominee. Despite the loss of an icon, Melanie Fiona’s win shed light on the talent that continues to grow and come out of Canada. ~Kayla Thompson
