Transformers keep on truckin’ at box office

Like so many Autobots and Decepticons, Transformers: Age of Extinction continues to blast away its box office competition. Paramount and director Michael Bay‘s fourth installment in the Transformers franchise, which has been rated an average score of 3.4 stars by Tribute online users, banked an additional estimated $36.4 million over the weekend for a total gross of $174.8 million domestically. But sci-fi and action weren’t the only genres to rule the box office. Warner Bros.’ comedy, Tammy and Sony’s horror flick, Deliver Us From Evil, debuted in second and third place, respectively. The Melissa McCarthy road trip movie made $21.2 million this past weekend, totaling $32.9 million, while the Eric Bana supernatural crime caper (4.3 Tribute stars) earned $9.5 million and a cumulative revenue of $15 million.

Sony’s comedy sequel, 22 Jump Street (3.5 Tribute stars) dropped two spots to fourth place from its perch at second last week, adding $9.4 million over the weekend to its impressive total gross of $158.9 million. Rounding out the weekend box office is DreamWorks/Fox’s animated sequel, How To Train Your Dragon 2 (3.5 Tribute stars). Weekend audiences contributed another $8.8 million for a total of $140 million. ~Daniel Horowitz
