Underworld gets Awakening at weekend box office

Underworld Awakening — the fourth movie in the vampire series — opened at No. 1 at the weekend box office, earning an estimated $25.4 million (all figures U.S.). Kate Beckinsale, who was in the first two Underworld movies but bowed out of the third, was back with a vengeance as vampire warrior Selene. The movie had higher earnings than expected, and distributor Sony Screen Gems believes Beckinsale’s return has a lot to do with that. This means she has two movies in the top five — Beckinsale also stars in Contraband. Tribute.ca users enjoyed it, rating it 3 1/4 stars (out of 5 stars). Opening in second place was the new debut Red Tails starring Cuba Gooding Jr., taking in $19.1 million and earning 4 stars from Tribute.ca users. Last weekend’s top movie, Contraband starring Mark Wahlberg dropped to third place, with $12.2 million and just under 4 stars. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which opened in limited release on Christmas but received a wide opening last Friday, about a little boy (Thomas Horn) whose father (Tom Hanks) died in the World Trade Center on 9/11, moved to fourth place, grossing $10.5 million and earning just under 4 stars. Rounding out the top five was the ultra-violent Haywire, about a female operative who can kick butt. It took in $8.4 million and earned 3 1/4 stars from Tribute.ca users.
