Ian Somerhalder, who stars as Damon in the hit series The Vampire Diaries, flew to Washington, D.C. yesterday to speak to the U.S. Congress about saving wildlife. The actor has formed The Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which “focuses on three themes: habitat conservation, species protection, and green energy initiatives” and is in 190 countries. He spoke to the politicians about the Multinational Species Conservation Funds Reauthorization Act which would protect endangered animals such as rhinos, elephants, marine turtles, tigers, gorillas and chimpanzees. He told them: “Environmental conservation has not just been a passion of mine, but a priority and when I began to find through my work as an actor that I was gaining an increasingly prominent platform in front of the American public, I knew immediately what I needed to do. The IS Foundation is my attempt to use this opportunity, this share of the public’s attention, for the greater good.” Somerhalder went on to say that species conservation is a priority for many Americans.
