Netflix is bringing back Tales of the City after nearly two decades.
It’s a new limited series based on Armistead Maupin’s novels about life in San Francisco. Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis played starring roles in the original 1993 TV adaptation of the same name, and its two sequels (1998’s More Tales of the City and 2001’s Further Tales of the City) and are both reprising their roles for this next chapter.
Today, Netflix released a behind-the-scenes look at the new series, featuring guest star Jen Richards as a young Anna Madrigal and Daniela Vega as her best friend Ysela. They star in a flashback episode focused on Anna’s arrival in 1966 San Francisco. The episode depicts the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, which marked the beginning of the transgender rights movement.
